GENERAL

For my training/studies I need information about psychotraumatology. What kind of material does Foundation Centrum ’45 have available for this purpose?
Foundation Centrum ’45 does not have an information folder on psychotraumatology for study or training purposes because of the innumerable angles and the various degrees of complexity pertaining to this subject. However, Foundation Centrum ’45 does publish a number of brochures that may well contain useful information in this respect. The literal reproduction of any (part of) texts is only allowed after prior permission of Foundation Centrum ’45. Requests to this end may be sent by e-mail. The website of Cogis , with which organisation Foundation Centrum ’45 works together, will likewise provide a great deal of information.

TREATMENT

Someone I know quite well is being treated at Foundation Centrum ’45. How can I best support this person?

People who have been through grave, shocking experiences need support and understanding. Usually, their experiences are so bad that it is hard to grasp what they have been through. Support and understanding can be expressed best by "being there" for someone. On the whole, you are advised against lengthy, detailed conversations; those are already held with the therapists. It is important to show understanding and be sympathetic towards the experiences this person has had, his current problems and the treatment he is now receiving; also, it is very important to support the person concerned in his everyday life. Further, adhere as much as you can to the familiar patterns in your life. Do not occupy your mind with the bad things in life only; distractions, activities and relaxation are very important.

My partner is being treated at Foundation Centrum ’45. Would it be possible to get in touch with other partners of clients?
Foundation Centrum ’45 regularly organises open days for the partners of patients who have been admitted to the clinic. Other departments also regularly organize similar activities for the benefit of the partners, and also, frequently, for the children of the patient who is receiving treatment. If you have questions on this matter, please get in touch with the therapist.

I have complaints that point to a psychotrauma, but I do not live near any of the locations where Foundation Centrum ’45 carries out treatment. Will I still be eligible for treatment?
Foundation Centrum ’45 is a national specialist centre. That means that people from all over the Netherlands are eligible for treatment at Foundation Centrum ’45.
Once you have registered and had an intake interview, it is decided whether treatment at Foundation Centrum ’45 is necessary or whether the treatment can be carried out elsewhere, in your own environment. If necessary and if so desired, your family doctor, for example, may consult with Foundation Centrum ’45 by phone as to what treatments might be suitable.

Foundation Centrum ’45 treats traumatised people who are second-generation WWII victims. Does it also have facilities for traumatised people of the third and fourth generations?
The term Foundation Centrum ’45 employs is 'post-war generation'. This includes the children of people who were traumatised during WWII. This group of patients is a target group of Foundation Centrum ’45 that has received official government recognition. The grandchildren or great-grandchildren of those who are directly traumatised are not treated at Foundation Centrum ’45 since they have neither experienced complex psychotrauma nor were raised by a parent who (has) lived through WWII.
That does not imply that they do not have any complaints; however, their diagnosis does not fall into the range of problems treated at Foundation Centrum ’45. However, if they suffer from complex psychotrauma complaints – due to other (violent) situations – they might be eligible for treatment.

I was treated at Foundation Centrum ’45 some time ago. What facilities are available to me as to follow-up care and evaluation?
At the start of your treatment, a treatment plan is drawn up together with you; this details which treatment you will be given and what it is meant to achieve. This will be evaluated with you on a regular basis. In addition, you will annually be given a broad, general questionnaire to complete that among other things measures the level of your complaints. This too will be discussed with you as it ties in with your treatment plan.

At the completion of the treatment, a trajectory for follow-up care is always arranged. If you leave the clinic, you may be offered a follow-up trajectory in the day clinic or in the outpatients’ department. After your treatment in the day clinic, you may arrange to come in for treatment in the outpatients’ department. Or, there may be pertinent follow-up care available to you in your own environment. In some cases a specialist social worker or social-psychiatric nurse is called in to provide follow-up care: thus, we want to make sure that you receive follow-up care from someone who is sufficiently knowledgeable about your problems. Arrangements for follow-up care are made by you and your therapist at the time of your completing treatment at a department.

I would very much like to get in touch with people who have been through experiences similar to my own. Is it possible to contact other clients through Foundation Centrum ’45, for instance via a forum on the Internet?
The website of Foundation Centrum ’45 does not offer any facilities for clients or ex-clients to get in touch with each other. However, there is a great number of websites of specific groups of clients that do offer this possibility.

How does Foundation Centrum ’45 assess whether or not I am eligible for treatment? And what are possible alternatives to treatment at Foundation Centrum ’45?
Foundation Centrum ’45 uses a number of criteria to assess whether someone can or cannot be accepted for treatment. For one thing, the psychotrauma complaints need to originate in events experienced during times of persecution, war and violence; here, violence should be taken to denote: job-related violence, riots, disasters, attacks and the taking of hostages. For another, your living conditions need to be such that they will enable an effective treatment of the consequences of your trauma. These could include the quality of your social network and your preparedness to share experiences with others during a group session.
On occasion, it is not possible or desirable to be treated at Foundation Centrum ’45. If this is the case, we will find a suitable alternative together with you and the referring party. That could be another institution, such as a mental healthcare institution in your own area, a specialist therapist or some other form of care.

Will my health insurance company pay for the expenses of treatment at Foundation Centrum ’45?

I am going to be treated at Foundation Centrum ’45. How can I get some idea of what my treatment is going to be like?
You may get an idea of the types of treatment we offer from the website and from our brochures. These different treatments are captured in what we term care programmes. The brochures briefly summarize each care programme.
Further, you will receive information about possible treatments during your intake; after this, you will have an advisory talk to discuss the trajectory of your treatment. And during treatment, the therapist will together with you draw up a treatment plan and evaluate this with you after a couple of months.
